How to price a collectible to sell

Price from real sold data, not from the highest listing you can find.

Most new sellers price wrong in the same way: they look at the highest active listing and match it. Active listings are asking prices, not sales. The number that matters is what figures actually sold for, and that is what this site tracks. Price near the sold median and the figure moves. Price at the top of the range and it sits.

Three real examples

FigureRetailTypical resaleSold medianPrice it at
Rabbit$12.25$15 to $40$38 (15 sales)List near $38
Secret Squirrel$12.25$60 to $250$73.50 (10 sales)List near $73.50
Sprout$12.25$60 to $250$163.85 (4 sales)List near $163.85

All three sold medians are from real eBay sales. Rabbit typically sells near $38, not the $40 top of its range. Secret Squirrel sells near $73.50, well under the $250 top of its band. Sprout is the exception that proves the rule: its $163.85 median sits near the middle of its range, so the range was right for that one.

The pricing rules

First, start from the sold median on the figure page when it exists, and from the midpoint of the typical resale range when it does not. Second, adjust for condition: new in box sells at the median, opened sells below it, and a figure with a damaged box sells lower still. Third, check the cheapest comparable active listing and undercut it by a little, or match it if you can wait. Fourth, use Best Offer on anything over $50. And fifth, remember the fee: a $50 sale on eBay keeps about $42.98 after the 13.25% fee and $0.40, so a price that looks profitable before fees may not be one after them.

Frequently asked questions

Should I price at the top of the resale range?

No. The top of the range is the best case, not the typical sale. Price near the sold median and your figure moves. Price at the top and it sits.

What if there is no sold data for my figure?

Use the typical resale range on the figure page and price at its midpoint. If the range is wide, price toward the low end for a fast sale and the high end if you can wait.

Should I use Best Offer on eBay?

Yes for secrets and anything over $50. A buyer who offers $10 under asking on a $150 figure is a sale, and a fixed price with no offers is a wait.
